Biography
Richard Batchelder
I have been a woodworker since 1976. I got my start doing general carpentry with my grandfather. In fact it was he who inspired me to expand and explore the world of woodworking. In 1977 I began building post and beam solar homes throughout NH and the surrounding states. It wasnąt long before I was doing the finish carpentry in some of the homes in the evening and weekends.
By 1980, I ventured out on my own, doing solar additions and custom kitchens. I continued to look for work that was challenging. In 1984, I designed and built my first timber frame home with the guidance of the łTimber Frame Home˛ written by Ted Benson. I was really starting to have a lot of fun. I designed and built several more timber-frame homes, my last one in 1992. In 1990 I was again looking for more stimulating ideas having to do with wood, when I discovered woodturning. I soon realized that woodturning provided an outlet for a boundless amount of creative energy. So, with much self-exploration and the dedicating of one day every week I have come to where I am today.
I am the past president of the Granite State Woodturners, a member of the Guild of NH Woodworkers and a state juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen. I also teach woodturning at the Homestead Woodworking School in Newmarket , NH.
My pieces, some one of a kind and some production pieces are finished with a food safe oil finish. I take great pride in all that I make and hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed making them. I presently reside in Bristol, NH, with my wife Jackie, where I have a cabinet shop. I continue to do building and restoration of homes in the area as well as building custom cabinets and small pieces of furniture.
